Chicago White Sox fans were upset when star pitcher Mark Buehrle was traded to the Miami Marlins. But even before his 2012 debut in a Marlins uniform, Buehrle is proving himself a supportive superstar in the pit bull community. Buehrle and his wife are advocates for animal rights and were active when they lived in Chicago in promoting shelter adoptions.

Dog-bite claims grab record insurance chunk August 18, 2010|By Becky Yerak, Tribune reporter Fido behaving badly caused dog-bite insurance claims to top $400 million in 2009, a record since the industry began keeping track in 2003. Dog bites accounted for more than a third of all homeowners insurance liability claims paid out in 2009, costing $412 million and up from $387.2 million in 2008, according to a study released this week by the Insurance Information Institute. The average cost of dog-bite claims was $24,840 in 2009, up 1.5 percent from 2008.
